Safe Routes To School in the news!

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- Dozens of youngsters waited impatiently in line for a chance to participate in a bicycle obstacle course dubbed a "bike rodeo" at Palla Elementary School.

"What we do is we teach children anything that has to do with safety as far as walking or riding their bike to school," said Tina Chapa of Bike Bakersfield, which ran the event.

Bike Bakersfield is a nonprofit advocacy organization that encourages people to seek alternative ways of transportation other than riding a motor vehicle.

"We have an obesity problem in our nation...and part of that is because our children are stationary," said Chapa.

Here are a few pictures from the day. I will be posting a few more in the next few days as I go through all of them. If you came to hang out with us thank you for your support with out the community we are nothing! Get out on your bikes and take a spin around town!

Sagebrush bike rodeo

Last Saturday we had a bike safety rodeo over at sagebrush. A lot of people ask me what a bike rodeo is and so I decided to take a few pics and explain it the best I can for you.

At bike rodeos we basically set up an obstacle course that simulates real life riding situations on the road and teach anyone who shows up safe riding skills. We go through the course with them once or twice then have the participant go through by themselves and show us what they have learned. I won't go to indepth with it because I would love you to come to the next one and learn in person! Check our website for updates on events. Now on with the pictures.
