He'll be delivering a special monologue to our crowd that's sure to be funny and enlightening. In addition, there are going to be many movers and shakers in the transportation world on hand - including NYC DOT Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan who will deliver some special words to our audience."

Hanna and Oscar

Earlier this week I was commuting along the Kern River Parkway Muli-use Path. More commonly know as the "Bike Path." When I rode up on Hanna and Oscar. They chose to ride their bikes to get to their favorite fishing location. I thought this was a great sight, two young people using a bicycle as transportation to reach an unreachable location by automobile.
What a beautiful day it was to ride and fish. Great job Hanna and Oscar.

@mashsf

Project Space is where I'm headed this weekend. After the ToC rolled throgh my town I want to see how the Mash crew handled there time on the road. The Tour of California is an invite only race of the top pros in the world. These guys invited themselves.

"We are an enthusiastic group of cyclists who have come from various endeavors to focus and share our passion for riding bikes. Not to be told where, with whom, or what we can ride, we enjoy the challenges associated with doing what we feel. Crashing the course of the 2009 Tour of California was such a challenge. 9 Days, 700 Miles, one gear ratio at a time." Via Arkitip

There is no question that these riders(MASHSF) have influenced my decision to ride across California on my journey from Bakersfield to Berkeley.- Ramon Jacquez

High-schoolers leading biking-to-school movement

BY JORGE BARRIENTOS, Californian staff writer jbarrientos@bakersfield.com

The new Bakersfield High School Caterpillar Biking Club is on a mission -- bike to school the entire month of May, and get as many students and residents involved as possible.

"We really just try to encourage people to ride their bikes," said BHS senior and bike club President Peter Welsh. "There's an alternative way to get around."

From Monday through Friday, students ride their bikes several miles through Stockdale Highway, taking a trail to Beach Park and over to BHS where members attend school. Some have given up their cars entirely for May -- National Bike Month -- riding to school, work and to run errands.

Welsh rides more than 13 miles every school day to and from BHS. A group of students meets at Finish Line Bicycles on Stockdale Highway just after 6 a.m..

"It's such a great way to start the morning," said Welsh, who has logged hundreds of miles this month. "It gets my day going."

The school club has gotten the support of several local biking groups, including Bike Bakersfield and Safe Routes to School, a national center advocating safe ways to get to school.

Ramon Jacquez, local coordinator of Safe Routes, has taught the students rules of the road, hand signals and ways to stay safe.

He said BHS students, who kicked off the club this month, have taken the lead in trying to get other high schools involved, and is the first campus to join Bike Bakersfield's junior club.

Local biking officials hope to use the school's club as a pilot program for other campuses. Arvin and Stockdale high schools are pushing to join the biking movement next year.

"The students are awesome," Jacquez said. "These young cyclists will be cyclists their whole lives."

Snider's Cyclery on Union Avenue is opening its doors to the students, too, teaching them how to repair bikes for free.

The students are "health-minded," simply enjoy riding their bikes and want to share that passion with others, said David Krog, a Spanish teacher at BHS and Caterpillar club adviser. Krog has ridden to school the last several years.

Adam Montoya, a junior at BHS, will take the lead next year for the Caterpillars (the club name has no real meaning, students said). His ultimate goal is to get more campuses involved in biking to school.

"It's healthy and it's fun," he said. "And it gets you from point 'A' to 'B' as a plus."

Bakersfield prepares for Amgen

Around Bakersfield we're beginning to see preparations that have been in the works for months.
"Behind the scenes the local organizing committee has been getting all of this lifestyle festival together. There's also a movie being played at the Fox Theater that evening, so after hours the party will continue," said Zac Griffin with Bike Bakersfield.
A new fence lines the bluffs to protect spectators. "There should be thousands of people watching," said Don Cohen with the Bakersfield Convention and Tourism Bureau.
One of the best places to view the race will be near the finish line up at BC. Cyclists will pass by multiple times before they finish the race.
"It's called a circuit finish and the idea is to pay off for the fans. I think they'll come through that start finish time three times," said Griffin.
There will be quite a few road closures to look out for. "Glenville area, if you travel through Round Mountain Road, if you use Alfred Harrell Highway, we all recommend that you wait.
The closures will probably begin about 12 that day and run till about five o'clock," said CHP Robert Rodriguez.
Closures start Wednesday, a short stretch of Panorama Drive between Haley Street and Mt. Vernon will be closed from ten in the morning. On Thursday that will expand out from Bucknell to Eaton.
Thursday China Grade Loop will be closed from Round Mountain Road to Alfred Harrell Highway. East bound Alfred Harrell Highway from Panorama Drive to Fairfax Road, and west bound Alfred Harrell Highway from Hart Park to Panorama Drive.
If you want to avoid the confusion, Bike Bakersfield has a suggestion. "We are encouraging that the people here locally leave their cars at home and ride on up to BC. And we are doing bike valet," said Griffin.
Some of those closures will be in effect from 9 in the morning until 5, and others won't close until about one in the afternoon. To check the closures you can go online to www.visitbakersfield.com/amgen.
